The tide of World War II was turned in 1944 on June 6th with the allied forces landing on a number of beaches along the Normandy coast in the North of France - this day was known as D-Day. Here we can see the AI MidJourney interpret the prompts to bring the action of the day to life. Initially heavy guns fired at the coastline and planes dropped bombs on the defences - but most people agree that this was not very effective. Lots of soldiers were injured or died as they landed on the beaches because the enemy had built fortifications which were manned by snipers and machine gunners amongst other skilled troops. Although the armada of vessels which crossed the English Channel for the mission was not anticipated to be in Normandy by the Germans, they had a large number of troops already stationed there in highly defensive postitions including concrete bunkers. Beach obstacles were also placed in strategic positions which the allied forces had to navigate before they could realistically start gaining a beachhead. Landing craft were ideal for moving the troops closer to the beach over the waves from the larger main carrying vessels - or even the smaller ones, but when they opened up their doors they exposed the troops to a hail of bullets from machine guns positioned at various locations and on various beaches. Basically, the enemy were looking down on the beaches from their fortified positions and had the advantage of height. The allies were persistent though, and during the battle, although thousands of military personel were killed, the enemy positions were finally overrun - and the germans were either captured or already dead from fire being returned from the landing attacking force.
